The Ask:
This was a concept project that I made in commemoration of the Beyoncé Renaissance being released. I wanted to create something special that highlights the power of femininity within the entire album experience, as well as the clear representations of ballroom culture that are referenced throughout.
The Deliverable:
Concept magazine project consisting of two spreads as well as a front and back cover with art direction established by myself, as well as the typographic designs and layouts developed.
The Process:
Some references in the typographic elements allude to works created by Paula Scher. Her expression of typography is something I was extremely drawn to as well while creating these designs. Much like the Queen Bee's work, Scher was very energetic, so that was something essential that I wanted to utilize while creating.
BDSM was a funny and eye-catching title that also encaptures the sexual freedom expressed through the lyrics and beats. Many of the titles echo throughout the songs in a fun visual style portrayed especially throughout the back cover. I played with various iterations in how to play with the typography, ultimately, establishing a grid system allowed for me to experiment with some fun breaks that activated the page's visual space.
